Exclusive! Madhubanti Bagchi on Sukoon: Fitting into Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s evolved music taste is a privilege for me

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set to drop his maiden non-film music album, Sukoon, on Wednesday. Along with Shreya Ghoshal, Armaan Malik, Papon, Rashid Khan, and others, Madhubanti Bagchi too has one song recorded for the album. The album is loaded with nine original numbers, including, Siva Tere, Qatar, Dard Pattharon Ka, Tujhe Bhi Chanda, and several others. 

Madhubanti, who hails from Kolkata and is currently settled in Mumbai, is overwhelmed with her project. “It is a privilege to even know a person like him (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, SLB) and I managed to work with him also. He is well known to be intimidating. But he made my recording experience a wonderful one. He is a perfectionist man and he knows what he wants. If you can’t deliver, he gets annoyed. Incidentally, my recording got over in 45 minutes and he was very happy. Every time we met after the recording, he reminded me that I sing well. I feel special,” she said.

It all started in 2020 after Madhubanti recorded a single with Shreyas Puranik – SLB’s assistant. “When I recorded the single, I did not know that he assist SLB. One day Shreyas told me that sir wanted to meet me and took me to his office. After a bit of conversation, sir asked me to sing a few lines of something that has classical influence. I sang a thumri. Sir immediately turned towards Shreyas and asked, ‘Why didn’t you bring her here earlier?’ We all laughed. That’s how it began. Even after the recording, I got chances to sit and chat with sir. Knowing him and hearing real stories of the legends like Lata Mangeshkar, RD Burman, Birju Maharaj, and others has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Most importantly, fitting into Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s evolved music taste is a privilege for me,” said an elated musician.
