Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani took a touristy trip to Kolkata on Tuesday while promoting their film Jugjugg Jeeyo. They enjoyed rumball at a city shop, took a ride in a yellow taxi and gorged on mishti doi, biryani and Galawati Kebab at a city hotel. The film that also features Anil Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Prajakta Koli and Maneish Paul will hit the theatre on June 24. Before that, Varun and Kiara talked to us about their experience in Kolkata.
Talking about her Kolkata visit, Kiara said, “Though I did not stay in this city, I was exposed to its culture through my friends. I came here before but never really got the opportunity to roam around and explore the city. This morning we went to Flury's and sat in a yellow taxi.”
Meanwhile, Varun recalled his visit to Kolkata in 2011 when Messi played an exhibition match against Venezuela. “My biggest memory associated with Kolkata was to fly down here and watch Messi play. I watched that in Salt Lake Stadium. I remember having soda shikhanji outside after the match. I stayed at my friend’s cousin’s house. I am a Messi fan,” said the actor who is planning to pack mishti doi from Kolkata for his Mumbai folks.
Varun and Kiara also expressed their respect for the city’s cultural heritage. “The film has a heritage in the world of cinema, especially Nandan. That is where the International Film Festival used to bring world cinema in the ’80s when there were no social media or OTT platforms. We had no access to it. So I think the association of cinema with the city goes back a long way. Legends like Satyajit Ray, RD Burman, Ashoke Kumar and so on gave so much to Indian cinema. The contribution is huge.”
The duo planned to gorge on Bengali food all day. They started their day with a visit at the city's iconic bakery, Flury's, where they enjoyed rumballs. In the afternoon, they gorged on mishti doi, biryani and Galawati Kebab from Oudh 1590 -- one of the famous biryani places. “Today I want to feel like a Calcuttan – food, cha and adda,” said the actress, who also planned to buy a Bengal handloom sari for her mother.
