Actor Avinash Tiwary, who can be seen in Neeraj Pandey's web series Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, opens up on how being a Bihari and a socio-politically aware individual was a great advantage for him to understand the story of Bihar.
Avinash told OTTplay, "As an actor, I try to search for the truth in a character, whoever they may be. When I was decoding the mind of Chandan Mahto (the criminal he plays in the web series), I realised that all his criminal activities actually are a result of fear. He has an immense fear of something and he turns his fear into anger. Anger is followed by rage and he then uses violence to take control of everything. Of course, his goal is to achieve power and that's his motivation, but the real reason behind his violence is fear."
Since the character is projected in a raw, real and rough manner in the show, at times the screen presence of an actor could make a criminal likable and sexy. When he asked him if he ever kept that in mind while being Chandan Mahto, Avinash said, "Sex appeal is something that doesn't always comes from vanity. I, as an actor, do not look at vanity while playing a character, but, yes, there is a charm in being powerful. At times, it is not the good looks but swag that increases a character's appeal. After watching Chandan Mahto in Khakee..., if anyone says, 'Dekh ke mazaa aa gaya', then I will take it as a compliment!"
The story of Khakee: The Bihar Chapter is based on real-life stories that are captured in the novel Bihar Diaries: The True Story of How Bihar's Most Dangerous Criminal Was Caught, written by IPS officer Amit Lodha. Chandan's character is loosely based on the criminal Pintu Mahto, who was active in Bihar in the early 2000s and is responsible for the killing many people, including politicians.
Since Avinash is a Bihari, he says that understanding the story and the setting was easier for him. "You see, I always say that if you are a Bihari, even if you are not involved in politics actively, you understand the game of politics. The people of Bihar are socio-politically aware. I am also someone who follows the news and keeps a track of what is happening in the country. So, I think that I understood certain nuances well," shared the actor.
Khakee: The Bihar Chapter also stars Karan Tacker, Jatin Sarna, Ashutosh Rana, Aishwarya Sushmita, Shraddha Das, Nikita Dutta, Vinay Pathak and Anup Soni. It is streaming on Netflix.
