Soumyajit Majumdar debuted in filmmaking with #homecoming which features Sayani Gupta, Hussain Dalal, Tushar Pandey, Soham Majumdar, Plabita Barthakur, and others in 2022. After the film got its digital release on SonyLiv, the director started to attend the festival round. On October 10, #Homecoming won Best Director at the Gange Sur Seine Film Festival in Paris. Now, Soumyajit is gearing up to make Parvathy Baul’s biopic.
“It has been more than six months since I started my research. Between March and August this year, I interviewed her intensively. She has given us consent to go ahead with the project. She liked the 350-odd pages of research that I have done. She was given the story and the screenplay. Things are likely to get formalised in December when she gets back in India,” Soumyajit told OTTplay.
The director further added that he was in talks with actresses from the Hindi film industry to play the character of the musician. “As of now, it is an independent film and we are close to zero-in the actress when everything gets finalised,” he said.
Meanwhile, talking about the recent award in Paris, Soumyajit said, “French new wave cinema has been the biggest influence on my aesthetics and sensibilities. It feels surreal to be acknowledged for my directorial debut feature in the city of cinema by legends of French cinema in the jury including Sophie Dulac, Nello Banfi, and Emmanuel Pierrat. I dedicate this award to the entire cast and crew of our labour of love.”
