After all the hue and cry around Lyca Productions exiting and Gokulam movies entering the picture, the Empuraan team is fully on track promoting the movie ahead of its big release. The Mohanlal-starrer, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, is coming to theatres six years after the release of the first part Lucifer in 2019. But Prithviraj Sukumaran recently said that Empuraan was different from the typical sequels and explained why. Read on...

Prithviraj Sukumaran on Empuraan

In a recent interview with Baradwaj Rangan for Galatta Plus, Empuraan director Prithviraj Sukumaran said that it can exist as a standalone film too.

“Empuraan is a little different from your run-of-the-mill sequels. I would maybe want to call it as a follow-up to Lucifer that exists as a standalone film which is essentially a mid-piece of a trilogy. So, I think somebody who has not seen Lucifer, this would still work as a standalone,” he explained.

The ace Malayalam actor-filmmaker further said that even timeline-wise, it is not just about what happens after the events in Lucifer. “We also revisit the past and all of that,” he added.

L2 Empuraan release date

L2 Empuraan, the second part of the Lucifer trilogy, is making its much-anticipated release in theatres worldwide on March 27, 2025. Mohanlal returns as Khureshi Ab'raam or Stephen Nedumpally in the L2E, which will carry the story forward and give audience a larger picture of the world of Khureshi Ab'raam. Prithviraj Sukumaran is also a part of the Empuraan cast as he will be seen in the role of Zayed Masood, the trusted aide of Khureshi.

Prithviraj had made a stellar directorial debut with Lucifer, which went on to become a blockbuster hit in 2019. Lucifer is available to stream on SonyLiv and OTTplay Premium. The film ended on a cliffhanger with Stephen, who up until then was shown as a political figure in Kerala, declaring himself to be Khureshi Ab’raam. The anticipation is high for the Empuraan release, and fans have already started booking slots for the first-day-first-show which will start at 6am on March 27.
