The wait for Lucifer’s sequel has been long for die-hard fans of Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The movie, which was initially planned to go on floors in 2020, was delayed due to the lockdown and subsequent hurdles due to the pandemic. Even last month, the film’s schedule was pushed after Prithviraj got injured . However, the team has now begun preparations full-swing to start its shoot by the end of September.

Prithviraj, who seems to have fully recovered from his ligament tear that he sustained during the shoot of Vilayath Buddha, was spotted at the film’s sets in Kochi during the weekend. This confirms that L2: Empuraan could go on floors soon.

L2: Empuraan to be a prequel?

There are already speculations of the story of L2: Empuraan, which marks the second instalment of the Lucifer franchise, which is scripted by Murali Gopy. The makers, however, have confirmed that the movie will not be a direct sequel of Lucifer – but will have portions pertaining to the past and present of Mohanlal’s character Khureshi Ab’raam along with those of the other characters in the movie.

In an earlier interview with Kochi Times, Prithviraj had said that Lucifer was initially planned as an 11-episode web series but he and Murali decided to focus on just one area and a select few characters for the movie franchise. Incidentally, the actor-director had also hinted that a web series based on the movie’s character is also in the pipeline.

What to expect from L2: Empuraan?

Meanwhile, the upcoming movie, which is expected to be one of the biggest projects in Malayalam cinema so far, will be shot in seven countries and is expected to break most box office records in the industry.

The film will also explore the dynamics between Mohanlal and Prithviraj’s characters – Khureshi Ab’raam and Sayed Masood – better, unlike in Lucifer, where the latter had just played a cameo role.
