L2 Empuraan, starring Mohanlal, has already become the highest grossing Malayalam film so far in 2025. However, with the controversy and the makers modifying the film, Empuraan has been seeing a dip in collection. The domestic box office collection across all languages stands at Rs 88 crore so far with its one week of collection. The Mohanlal-starrer had one more week to go, before the next set of films release for the Vishu weekend.
The recently released L2 Empuraan is the second instalment of the action thriller trilogy Lucifer, headlined by Mohanlal. The film is written by Murali Gopi and directed by actor Prithviraj Sukumaran. L2 Empuraan debuted in theatres on March 27, and following its run for eight days now, it has collected Rs 88 crore at the domestic box office so far.
L2 Empuraan was caught in controversy after it drew ire of right-wing groups for certain portions in the film which depicted riots akin to Gujarat riots in 2002. Following the backlash, the makers made some modifications and Mohanlal even put out a long post apologising for the same.
Ever since these cuts were implemented, the film has been seeing a dip in collection. On day 7, the Malayalam version earned about Rs 5.65 crore, which dropped to Rs 3.91 the following day. Empuraan is also expected to see competition from next week’s Vishu releases, including Mammootty-starrer Bazooka.
Along with its normal version, Empuraan also released on IMAX. But unfortunately, the IMAX version had to be stopped, given the team has made modifications and it would cost them a huge sum to upload the re-edited version again for IMAX.
It is noted that Empuraan was announced as the first ever Malayalam film to release on IMAX. A sequel to Lucifer which is available to stream on SonyLiv and OTTplay Premium at discounted prices, Empuraan features a star ensemble, including actors Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Pranav Mohanlal, and others.
