Empuraan Day 1 box office collection: Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film off to a powerful start, eclipses Leo's record opening with 500+ extra shows

Empuraan box office collections day 1: Prithviraj Sukumaran’s thriller film, starring Mohanlal, was off to a powerful start at the box office as it landed in theatres worldwide on March 27. The movie, which shattered several pre-sales records, raked in an impressive Rs 22 crore on its first day at the box office, as per Sacnilk. Previously, Tamil star Vijay's Leo had the biggest opening in Kerala. The Mohanlal-starrer has now eclipsed Leo's record opening and also added over 500 extra shows. Let’s break down the box-office collections of Empuraan on day 1.

Empuraan day 1 box office collections

Empuraan, the sequel to the blockbuster Lucifer, was released in theatres on Thursday. The most highly anticipated Malayalam film of the year raked in Rs 22 crore in India net collections, across all languages. It needs to be noted that Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film released in several centres outside the country, such as the Middle-East, US and even Australia.  

Empuraan released in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and Tamil. The original Malayalam film raked in the most collections with Rs 19.45 crore. Among other south Indian languages, the Telugu version crossed Rs 1 crore in BO collections. Vijay's Leo had the biggest opening in Kerala with Rs 12 crore. Though the Empuraan's Rs 19.45 crore collection is for the Malayalam version, which released outside Kerala too, Prithviraj's film is expected to have bettered Leo's figures in the state.

All Kerala centres saw good occupancy, with Kochi topping the chart for (IMAX 2D) with a full 100 per cent followed by Thiruvananthapuram. Online trackers have also said 516 extra late-night shows have been added for Empuraan. The previous best was again for Leo with 313 shows.

Empuraan gets mixed reviews

However, the impressive numbers for Empuraan on day 1 were a given, considering the record booking on BookMyShow. But the Mohanlal-starrer, which narrates the tale of Stephen Nedumpally or Khureshi Ab’raam and Zayed Masood (played by Prithviraj Sukumaran), opened to mixed reviews on Thursday. While the film was lauded for its slick making and stylish visuals, critics were not mostly impressed with the plot.
