Initially scheduled for a 2024 release, Kangana Ranaut is back with her yet-unreleased film Emergency. She has dropped a trailer for the movie which is scheduled to be out in theatres in 2025. The second trailer leaves a lot of questions and the biggest of them is – whether Indira Gandhi was an influential or controversial Prime Minister. The makers try to explore the very concept through the 1.50-minute clip. Here’s looking at it…

Anupam Kher’s Jayaprakash Narayan – An ally or enemy to Kangana Ranaut’s PM Indira Gandhi?

The new trailer of Emergency begins with Anupam Kher's Jayaprakash Narayan writing a letter to PM Indira Gandhi (played by Kangana Ranaut). In this letter, he talks about the Prime Minister riding not a chair but a lion. This is a direct hint at the Emergency period. According to the letter, the lion is someone who roars across the globe.

Later, it is revealed that he is among those uncomfortable with the decision implemented. "Aaj yeh sher Bharat ke Loktantra ko kha gaya," he said, hinting at how there was no freedom in India at that point. He also questions if the lion might devour anybody on her way.

The Emergency period – A boon or a bane?

The focus then shifts to Kangana seated on a chair. Many arrests made during the Emergency period are explored in the trailer. It does not end there. It is shown that Indira meets with a rebellion from the President since she did not seek the approval of the entire cabinet before taking the big step. She responds to it by stating, "Main hi cabinet hoon, Mr. President."

Indira speaks of war, which is when we also see a glimpse of Milind Soman as Sam Manekshaw. She recalls the city of Pandavas (and Delhi's old name) Indraprastha and declares war against the Kauravas. With it, the screen reads India's Most Iconic Leader, and within a few minutes, iconic changes to controversial.

Shreyas Talpade’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee has a POV on Indira Gandhi’s Declaration of Emergency

Shreyas Talpade's Atal Bihari Vajpayee questions how nobody thought Indira would strangle democracy itself. Just then, we see a series of torture methods, including burning and drowning in water. With it, the makers state it is not the untold history of Indira, but the told story of India. Of course, the trailer ends with the iconic, "India is Indira and Indira is India." Through this statement, the makers have left it open to speculation that Indira Gandhi as PM was too strong for her own good.

After the delay, Kangana Ranaut's Emergency is now scheduled to be released in theatres on January 17, 2025.
