Emergency starring Kangana Ranaut was supposed to be released in cinemas on September 6, 2024. However, the release date of the film now has been postponed once again. This development came days after Ranaut claimed that the film's clearance was 'stopped' because members of the Central Board of Film Certification received 'threats. The film has been written, directed, and produced by the actress and is a biological political action thriller which is based on the 21-month period of the Indian Emergency.

In the film Emergency, Kangana will be seen as Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India. The film also marks her solo directorial debut. The trailer of the film was released on August 14 and gave a glimpse of the 'darkest times of democratic India'. It is set against the backdrop of one of India's most uproarious political periods and promises to showcase a gripping tale of historical events.
While the trailer of the film takes us to the time when Indira Gandhi entered politics and also shows her bond with her father, the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, it also shows how she dealt with political turmoil, conflicts, and other issues throughout her lengthy career. It also gives some glimpses into other issues including Emergency period, the rise of Khalistan movement, and the Shimla Agreement, among others.

The film features Kangana as Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade in the role of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram.
Directed and written by Ranaut, the film is backed by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
Emergency Release Date
The film was earlier scheduled to release in November 2023, however, the film was then postponed to June 2024 and then the recent release date was September 6. However, the film has once again been postponed and the new release date of the film is yet to be announced.
Emergency OTT platform
The film will stream on Netflix after its theatrical run. The movie will be out on the OTT platform two months after its theatrical run.
