Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency has been the talk of the town for weeks, particularly due to its ongoing tussle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over suggested cuts that did not sit well with the filmmakers. This dispute led to the film failing to secure a CBFC certificate, forcing it to abandon its original September 6, 2024, release date and postpone the premiere. The makers then moved to the High Court, challenging the CBFC and the recommended cuts. Over the past few days, multiple rumors surfaced, culminating in yesterday’s confirmation that director Kangana Ranaut and the Emergency team agreed to make the cuts suggested by the Revising Committee. However, a recent report reveals that the actor-director and her team are still unhappy with the situation.
Kangana Ranaut & Team Not Happy with the Cuts
Emergency stars Kangana Ranaut as former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Directed by Ranaut, the film boasts an ensemble cast and chronicles Gandhi’s life from her swearing-in as PM to her assassination. The film has already faced several controversies, including calls for a ban by Sikh bodies and other groups. After an intense back-and-forth with the CBFC, it was recently reported that Kangana and her team are proceeding with the cuts suggested by the Revising Committee. Now, according to a new report, the team is dissatisfied with these changes but is reluctantly accepting them for the larger good of the movie.
A source close to the situation told Mid-Day, “Even though the team is not happy with the cuts, they have given in to the CBFC’s demands in order to release Emergency on time. The team believes that even after the cuts, the film tells an important story about a significant chapter of our political history.”
The source further added that Kangana wants what’s best for the movie, even if it means complying with the CBFC’s demands. “The makers are focused on keeping the key parts intact. Despite the challenges, they are eager to show Emergency to the audience so they can understand the significance of democracy,” the source said.
After Zee Entertainment moved to the High Court, alleging delays in the film certification process, the CBFC told the court during the September 26 hearing that Emergency could only be released if the suggested cuts were made. However, in a recent interview, Kangana called some of the cuts unreasonable. On September 30, the film’s co-producer’s counsel informed the court that Ranaut had agreed to the proposed cuts. The CBFC counsel claimed the cuts do not affect the film’s runtime significantly, as they involve only a few words. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for October 3, 2024.
