Kangana Ranaut's Emergency is one of the most awaited films of 2025. The film has faced a release delay issue. It was supposed to be released on September 6, 2024. However, it was postponed after the Central Board of Film Certification revoked its certificate after multiple petitions. Now, the wait is finally over as the actress' directorial debut is all set to hit theaters on January 17. However, in a new interview, Kangana said that choosing a theatrical release for Emergency was a wrong decision. Why? Read on.
In a conversation with News18, Kangana Ranaut opened up about the delay in the Emergency release. She said she was 'scared' by the delay in the film's release when the CBFC refused to certify it for months.
“I felt that it was a wrong decision to release it in theatres. I thought I could have gotten a better deal on OTT. I also wouldn’t have had to go through censorship then and my film wouldn’t have been dissected. I didn’t know what all they (the CBFC) would remove and let us keep,” she said.
The actress said that she has made several wrong choices on many levels and one of them was directing Emergency.
She said that she took it for granted. "I previously talked about the movie Kissa Kursi Ka. Nobody has seen that film to date and back then, they burnt all the prints. Also, nobody made films about Mrs Gandhi. Upon watching Emergency, today’s generation will be surprised to think how she became like that; after all, she became PM three times. I underestimated things and thought that I would be able to get away by making a film on Emergency," she added.
Emergency stars Kangana as PM Indira Gandhi. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Chhabra, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and Satish Kaushik in key roles. The film will be released in cinemas on January 17.
As per the streaming partner listed on the poster, Emergency, after its theatrical release, will land on Netflix. You can watch the film with your subscriptions without any added rent. However, the OTT release date is under wraps.
