Elemental is an animated rom-com directed by Peter Sohn, best known for The Good Dinosaur, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios. Set in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic elements of nature (water, air, fire, earth) in Element City, the story follows fire element Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis) and water element Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie), who meet and fall in love after he is summoned by a plumbing accident at a convenience store owned by Ember's father Bernie (Ronnie Del Carmen).
Peter Sohn had pitched the concept of Elemental to Pixar based on the idea of whether fire and water could ever connect and that the idea was inspired by his experiences as the son of immigrants in New York City in the 1970s. Elemental premiered out of competition as the closing film at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 27, 2023, and then theatrically released in the United States on June 16. It comes to India this Friday, June 23. The reviews that came for the film, starting in Cannes, were far from favourable, which is probably why despite the extended weekend, including Juneteenth, Elemental had a dismal debut, making it the worst start for a Disney-Pixar venture.
The film, which also features voice talents like Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara, Mason Wertheimer, Ronobir Lahiri, Wilma Bonet, Joe Pera, Matt Yang King, Jeff LaPensee, Ben Morris, Jonathan Adams, Alex Kapp and PL Brown, will come to Disney+Hotstar in due course of time. Current speculative streaming date is sometime in September, which, of course, we will update as soon as there is official word from the streamer.
