Rupam Islam was dragged into a controversy on social media recently. His popular song, Ekla Ghar Amar Desh, has been an anthem of heartbreak among the young generation since 2002. This song is now embroiled in controversy.
Recently, a post was viral on social media. The post shows Ekla Ghar's lyrics on one side and Chris de Burgh’s Not Crying Over You on the other. Someone wrote in the caption, “I thought since childhood that our so-called Bong rock king Rupam Islam’s Ekla Ghar was the original lyric. Now I think a majority of the songs are copies. Oh sorry, Bengali translation. My whole childhood was a lie.”
The post went viral. Many people did not know that Rupam made this song inspired by the original and credited the lyricist as well. Now, knowing the truth, many people got angry and criticized. Trolling started. Singer Durnibar Saha made this public and it was also trolled. One group says that this is not an inspiration, but a translation. Each line is translated. On the other hand, the way Durnibar posted angered Rupam's fans as his post was misconstrued as a humiliation to Rupam.
Durnibar wrote, “From the morning, some people are posting like their life became a failure. I share the picture for their sake. Not everything is written in Google. Please be properly informed before making any statement about anyone.” Along with his post, he shared lyrics where Rupam clearly credited Chris de Burgh.
Rupam did not make any comment so far. However, his wife Rupsa Dasgupta did not spare the trolls. Calling them ‘nincompoops, she wrote that it was Rupam Islam’s 2005’s Epitaph that introduced a generation to Chris de Burgh’s song.
This issue created a buzz on social media. No group spares the other.
