The release of the Dunki trailer after three teases provides us with more insights into the story. The trailer begins with Shah Rukh Khan going back to his Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge days. Well, back in 1995, as a soldier, Hardayal Singh Dhillon, aka Hardy, entered the small Punjabi town named Laltu. The trailer then talks about how, along with four simpletons, he dreams about going to London, which is definitely not an easy task.
Dunki's premise unveiled
The trailer effectively explains the premise while still leaving the viewer wanting for more, as it should. Dunki is a film that takes place entirely in a flashback. SRK's character's three-minute-long narration takes the story forward 25 years later. It seems like Rajkumar Hirani has followed the template that he created for both 3 Idiots and Sanju. Both films shuffled between flashback sequences and current times.
In 3 Idiots, we see R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi's characters remembering their college days as Aamir Khan's character vanishes into thin air after graduation. Meanwhile, in Sanju, Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt talks about his life as Anushka Sharma, an author, writes a book on him. Additionally, she researches his life and consults with other people, including Vicky Kaushal, who plays his long-lost friend.
In a nutshell, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Vikram Kochhar, and Anil Grover play the roles of four friends from a small Punjabi town with the lifelong goal of escaping to England. The fact that they are in need of both the visa and the ticket is their main concern. Everything changes the moment a soldier (SRK) steps off a train. The soldier-like assurance that he will lead them to their ideal homeland is his parting gift to them. This is the story of a comical and touching adventure that takes place in the desert, on the sea, and, most importantly, in the hinterlands of their subconscious.
Themes explored
Dunki is a perilous voyage that puts their bravery, intelligence, and the strain of their competing philosophies to the test. Amidst the many themes explored in the film—love, homecoming, borders, and friendship—stands a narrative.
Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani, and Kanika Dhillon penned the film. Red Chillies Entertainment, Jio Studios, and Rajkumar Hirani Films have produced the highly anticipated flick, scheduled for release on December 21, 2023.
