The streaming giant Netflix just dropped the trailer of the apocalypse comedy and political satire Don't Look Up on YouTube and it’s a blast from a not-so-far possibility in the future of mankind. Adam Mckay, who is known for Step Brothers and Anchorman, has helmed the film. Mckay has also done the screenplay and penned the story with David Sirota. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence join a powerful ensemble cast that includes Meryl Streep, Rylance, Cate Blanchett, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, and Scott Mescudi.
Astronomers Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) and Dr. Kate Dibiasky (Lawrence) are hit with the explosive (pun intended) realisation that a huge comet, called the ‘planet killer,’ is headed towards earth. But apart from the two, no one across the US gives a damn about the impending doom, even though the colliding comet would kill everyone on the planet. The trailer drives into the nonchalance and indifference of the power holders through hilarious peeks. Meryl Streep, who plays the president of the United States, chirps in that the action plan is to “sit tight and assess,” to the bewilderment of the two astronomers. The brilliant trailer traces the trials that the two face in bringing the ‘worst news in the history of humanity’ to mankind’s notice. Tyler Perry and Kate Blanchett, as the smiling television anchors who play no part in voicing out loud the gravity of the end, instantly grab eyeballs. There’s also the FBI that comes into the picture. The fact that the comet has elements worth $20 trillion makes more noise than the imminent collision.
Don’t Look Up is directed by Adam McKay and produced by him along with Kevin Messick, Scott Stuber, Betsy Koch, Todd Schulman. The story is by McKay and David Sirota. The film will premiere in select theatres on December 10 and will drop on Netflix on December 24.
