Mammootty says Dominic is not a ‘so-called hero’, explains why he said no to Gautham Vasudev Menon’s suggestion for adding ‘more swag’

Gautham Vasudev Menon’s movie Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, which released in theatres recently, is especially noted as Mammootty is presented without any of the aura that comes with being a Malayalam megastar. In a recent press interaction, Mammootty decodes his character Dominic and explains why he said no to Gautham Vasudev Menon’s suggestion for adding more swag to the role.

In Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, Mammootty plays a cop-turned detective who goes after a simple case only to realise that there is more to it than what meets the eye. In a press meet, held after the movie's release on January 23, 2025, Mammootty explained that Dominic does not fall into the ‘so-called hero’ character.

While explaining that Dominic is someone who was ousted from the force, the Bramayugam actor said that he has his own set of problems. “Also, he is a diabetic,” Mammootty added with a chuckle.

“So, we cannot say all heroes should fight like hundreds of villains in all movies. All characters are not wrestlers,” Mammootty said, while adding that he had also done those roles but Dominic is not that ‘so-called hero’.

“This is more a realistic and rooted character. Sir (GVM) said that we could bring in more swag, but I said no.. So that Dominic will remain a normal person and do stuff that ordinarily people will do,” Mammootty explained.

He also said that it is great to see the audience accepting such a character in a film with thriller elements.

It needs to be pointed out that Mammootty has not restricted himself from exploring various looks for his films and playing characters with darker shades as seen in the 2024 Bramayugam, where he played an ageing patriarch.

The Mammootty-starrer also features Gokul Suresh in a key role along with Viji Venkatesh, Lena, Siddique, and Vijay Babu. Sushmitha Bhatt and Meenakshi Unnikrishnan are also part of the cast. The film, produced by Mammootty Kampany, marks Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Malayalam directorial debut.

Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse is running in theatres in Kerala.
