In the battle between Doctor Strange and Batman at the box office, the doctor seems to have come out on top. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has become the highest grossing film of 2022, surpassing Robert Pattinson’s The Batman.
According to a report in Variety, the MCU film has earned the top spot on international box office charts and has grossed over $800 million globally, becoming the highest grossing film of the year so far. The record had previously been held by The Batman, which has grossed approximately $768.5 million worldwide. The Matt Reeves directorial featured Pattinson in the role of the caped crusader, with Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright and John Turturro in pivotal roles.
The record for the highest grossing film of 2021, globally, is held by another MCU film, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film, which has grossed over $1 billion globally, also saw Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange. The sequel to Doctor Strange saw the Marvel superhero delve into the Multiverse yet again after the events of Spider-Man.
In addition to Cumberbatch, the film also starred Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams, who reprise their roles from previous MCU films. The film also features Xochitl Gomez in a pivotal role. The film was directed by Sam Raimi, from a script written by Michael Waldron.
Other Marvel Studios’ films awaiting release include the upcoming Thor sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder, starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman in lead roles. The film will be released on July 8. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, is also scheduled for release this year.
