To the exaltation of Cruella fans, Emma Stone is set to make a comeback in the sequel of the Disney movie, reports Deadline. The first film had been simultaneously released in theatres as well as on Disney+, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chronicling the rags-to-riches origin story of the titular character, Cruella witnessed a successful box-office run in spite of the limited number of theatres, made evident by Disney’s decision to go in for a second installment.
Cruella De Vil, the infamous Disney villain who gained notoriety for wanting to skin puppies to make a coat out of their spotted fur, joins the long list of traditional villains and antagonists whose stories are being told through stand alone movies, along the lines of Joker and Maleficent. Disney’s attempt at telling the story of how one of its classic villains rose the ranks from petty thief to wealthy heiress and fashion icon, through her eyes.
The first film’s director Craig Gillespie had earlier hinted that he would be on board for a sequel to Cruella in an interview with Collider, saying that they had ‘only just met her’, referring to the lead character and there was more of her story to be told.
Although Stone’s being aboard the project is definitely good news for Disney Studios, the studio is still embroiled in controversy in the wake of Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against the studio over the release of the new Black Widow movie on its streaming platform, Disney+. Although details regarding the release of the new Cruella movie are yet to be out, Emma Stone’s deal with the company will reportedly favour both parties.
