Though Disney+ Hotstar’s library might have been depleted a bit, with it losing its HBO content, the platform is coming up with new options to ensure that it attracts and retains users, while making it easier to subscribe to its services.

According to reports, the OTT platform is testing a new option to allow viewers to subscribe directly through Google Play Store, without depending on other payment modes such as UPI, digital wallets, netbanking or credit and debit cards. This feature could soon be available for Android users, as per a Reddit user.

The user had posted a video that shows the feature for paying the subscription fee for Disney+ Hotstar through Google Play Store and also options to use Play Points that subscriber already has in their account. The feature would be available for Hotstar’s three paid plans – Mobile, Super+ Ads free and Premium. The option is currently tested for only a limited number of users.

This payment option will also allow users to earn Play Points that can be used for In-App purchases later. The Play Points plan unveiled by Google for Indian users last year had categorized users in three tiers – Bronze, Silver and Gold. Bronze tier users will be able to earn a point for every Rs 5 spent while the Silver and Gold members earn 1.1 and 1.4 points respectively. Hotstar’s current plans are priced between Rs 499 to Rs 1499 per year.

Meanwhile, the platform has a host of releases lined up in June, starting from Avatar: The Way of Water, which began streaming from June 7. It will also stream the second part of Anil Kapoor’s The Night Manager on June 30, Marvel Studio’s Secret Invasion on June 21 and its first-ever Malayalam web series titled Kerala Crime Files from June 23 onwards. The platform has been greenlighting several web series in South languages to further stock up its library.
