Actor and director Lal Jose stated that his 2006 film Classmates, which was set on campus, is often romanticised by viewers. But he insisted that it does not fit into this category, referring to the movie as a murder mystery. In an interview with Kaumudy Movies to promote his upcoming Malayalam movie, Oru Bharatha Sarkar Ulpannam, he made this statement.

"Classmates has always been a murder mystery that was effectively set in a college. Typically, people reveal the killer after seeing the film in theatres," he said. The filmmaker added that he wanted to buck this trend by directing viewers' attention to other aspects based on an educational institution.

He continued by saying that the main focus of the movie is an unintentional murder, including who did it and how. "Classmates is a timeless film that holds relevance across all periods," he declared.

Lal Jose went on to say that there is no need for a sequel because the film is complete. If Classmates had been made today, Lal Jose stated that he would have cast Arjun Ashokan in a lead role.

The 1991 graduating class of a college is the focus of the narrative. The friends get together for a class reunion in 2006, having worked in various parts of the world, to relive the best moments of their college years. One of the students nearly dies the night of the reunion. This triggers memories of what happened in 1991, particularly the unexpected death of a close friend.

Classmates turned out to be one of the most well-liked films of the decade, especially because of its narrative, performances, and music. Numerous critics rank it among the top college films available in Malayalam theatres.

Nearly all of the young actors from that time starred in the film, which gained an adherent fan base in the years following its release. The film also led to the idea of an alumni meet gaining popularity in Kerala, and institutions began hosting these events to facilitate the upkeep of relationships between former students.
