Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has scored a massive hit with his latest outing Jawan. While it may appear as a conventional Bollywood drama, following the familiar template of five fights and six songs, there's more beneath the surface.

The distinct appeal of Jawan lies in its unconventional approach to storytelling, which was perfected by Tamil filmmakers, and has struck a chord with audiences in the Hindi-speaking regions.

Atlee, both writer and director of Jawan, has tried to mould Shah Rukh Khan into a South Indian superstar akin to Rajinikanth and Thalapathy Vijay. Judging from the box office response, the movie patrons are lapping up the new dimension of SRK without a lot of complaints.

Jawan expertly bends escapist entertainment with a focus on pressing social issues that hurt common people transcending political, cultural, and religious divides. This style of filmmaking is prevalent in Tamil cinema, championed by filmmakers like Shankar, AR Murgadoss and now Atlee.

Jawan casts a wide net, addressing a spectrum of concerns, from farmer suicides, and the nexus between politics and crony capitalists to political corruption. The high point in the movie arrives when SRK sort of breaks the fourth wall to urge the audience to choose their political leaders wisely. All these elements, which are integral to Tamil cinema, now have been exported to Bollywood, courtesy of Atlee.

Will the success of Jawan bring in a new trend in the way Bollywood makes its blockbusters from now on? Only time will tell.
