Perilloor Premier League is receiving a lot of praise for its effortless narrative style and plausible humorous element. However, how many have realised that the web series shares some elements with Deepu Pradeep’s first film, Kunjiramayanam, which revolves around the fictional village of Desham and its people? Deepu wrote the screenplay for the movie, and Basil Joseph made his directorial debut with it.
Similar to the Vineeth Sreenivasan starrer, Perilloor Premier League features a cast of protagonists with peculiar monikers. The web series certainly demonstrates Deepu's ability to effortlessly imbue each of his characters with likeable quirks once again. The PPL director, Praveen Chandran, commended this aspect of Deepu's writing in an interview with OTTplay. He claimed that humour needs to be spot-on in order to wow the crowd, and Deepu does it so well.
He said, "He has this flair for infusing spontaneous humour into his characters." Furthermore, the director had mentioned how Deepu was able to infuse the screenplay with his own distinctive aesthetic, which is sure to please the audience.
Works inspired by Deepu’s short stories and blogs
Screenplays for two short films and a collection of short stories were written by Deepu, who started blogging in 2007. Both Kunjiramayanam and Perilloor Premier League are based on short stories written for his blog a long time ago. Salsamukku (2011), Cut Piece Kuttan (2012), Just Married (2012), Paathirathriyile Premam (2010), and Gundakal Karayaarilla (2013) served as the basis for his debut feature film.
In an exclusive interview with OTTplay, Deepu revealed that Perilloor Premier League is based on almost 14 short stories that he had written during his blogging years. He continued that Nikhila Vimal’s character Malavika was the only one that was not from his blog, and everyone else was part of separate narratives. “Creating a new story around Malavika and incorporating the other characters was the process for PPL,” he added.
