Pawan Kumar's much-fancied film Dhoomam has finally hit the big screen after much ado, with Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil and Hombale Films by his side. The crime thriller, which released on June 23, is centred on the workings of the tobacco industry and also stars Aparna Balamurali, Roshan Mathew, Vineeth Radhakrishnan, Joy Mathew and others with Poornachandra Tejaswi scoring the music and Preetha Jayaraman handling cinematography.
As far as the audience response on the opening day is concerned, the general consensus suggests that Fahadh's performance has impressed almost everyone with the film, however, attracting mixed responses. The verdict that's gradually emerging on Twitter currently stands divided wherein one section of the audience members have praised writer-director Pawan Kumar for putting together yet another gripping thriller. "Slow-burn thriller with good engaging moments. Typical @pawanfilms climax. Aspects of smoking are explored without being preachy. The movie lets the audience use their brain without spoon-feeding which I liked. Kudos," wrote one user praising the filmmaker.
On the other hand, several Twitter posts have pulled up Pawan for not delivering on expectations. These responses, so to speak, have asserted that the film would have fared better with the help of a tighter narrative and more compelling performances. Fahadh Faasil remains the plus point all across but Aparna Balamurali's performance seems to have failed to impress.
OTTplay's own review observes that Dhoomam's shortcomings largely stem from its sluggish screenplay which fails to do justice to the intriguing premise and setup. You can read the detailed review of the film here:
Dhoomam's Kannada dubbed form, too, arrived in cinemas today, June 23. While the same issues quite obviously affect the Kannada version as well, audiences across Karnataka are mighty pleased with the quality of the dubbing achieved by the team. Although the distribution of the film in the state has the Malayalam version prioritised with respect to screen/show count, Dhoomam Kannada, too, has received a wide reach with close to 150 screens.
