More than a decade after he first contemplated making it, director Pawan Kumar got around to bringing his long-time dream to the big screen as Dhoomam, a Malayalam film. Pawan, who was to make a Kannada film with production house Hombale Films featuring Puneeth Rajkumar, could not get that project on the road, owing to the untimely demise of the lead actor.

But when the banner expressed interest in working with Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil and wondered if Pawan had a script that’d be ideal, he pitched the story he wanted to make as C10H14N2 (The chemical formula of Nicotine) and they all jumped onboard. And that’s how Dhoomam came to be.

Unfortunately for Pawan, Dhoomam was not the runaway success everyone thought it would be, given the combination of the director, actor and production house. Dhoomam opened to scathing reviews and even its OTT release was delayed. When it eventually came, it was not on the more popular platforms, but went to Apple TV on TVOD (Transactional Video on Demand).

Almost a year after its theatrical release, Dhoomam is now getting yet another OTT outing and this time, it is one that will make sure that those who wanted to catch it online will do so. On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, Hombale Films is taking the film to its official YouTube channel.

Dhoomam had Fahadh as a marketing executive for a tobacco company, who is kidnapped along with his wife. When they regain consciousness, they realize that one of them has a timebomb implanted in them, and that following instructions of their kidnapper may be the only way out of their predicament. The film was meant to have a pertinent message about the perils of ssmoking, but it did not have the requisite impact.
