Malayalam actors Fahadh Faasil, Aparna Balamurali and Roshan Mathew’s latest venture Dhoomam is set to get its OTT release this week, as per reports. The movie, which marked Hombale Films’ debut Malayalam production venture, failed to get the cash registers ringing at the box office like its previous releases – KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara.
That said, the makers will be hoping for a wider reach for the movie, which is helmed by Lucia and U-Turn director Pawan Kumar, when it drops on Amazon Prime Video, which is reportedly to have bought the rights of the film in multiple languages including Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
The movie, which was earlier titled Nicotine, was initially meant to be shot in Kannada. But the film was delayed and found no backers, till Hombale came onboard. Even then the plan was to get Fahadh to act in Kannada. In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Fahadh told us, “Initially, I said no because I didn’t want to play a hero in a Kannada movie. But they kept following up, and eventually asked me what my deal was. I told them, ‘I want to make it in Malayalam. You can have other versions, but the original will have to be in Malayalam’.”

The movie revolves around a marketing head of a tobacco company, Avinash, and his wife Dia, who are kidnapped and have to meet the demands of their kidnapper to save themselves from a fatal predicament. How their fates are connected to Avinash’s job of increasing the sales of cigarettes and the race against time to undo the damage they have done, form the plot of Dhoomam.
Dhoomam, which also has Vineeth, Anu Mohan and Achyuth Kumar in pivotal roles, is also Pawan’s first-ever Malayalam movie. Though there has been no official confirmation from the production house or the OTT platform yet, the film is expected to drop on Amazon Prime Video on July 21, as per reports.
