Speculation is rife that John Abraham, who recently garnered appreciation for his performance and rugged look in Shah Rukh Khan’s blockbuster hit Pathaan, will be returning to Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) famed franchise Dhoom. The latest instalment in the series Dhoom 3 - starring Aamir Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Uday Chopra - made an earning of more than ₹557 crores globally. John appeared in the original movie Dhoom, playing the antagonist. It was released in 2004.

According to latest reports, the makers of Dhoom may be thinking of reviving the popular action thriller film franchise. A source recently told Bollywood Hungama, “If YRF is looking to cast him yet again in a negative role it will come as no surprise. There could be more truth to it than any other rumour. In fact, for the past couple of days there have been daily meetings at YRF and John has been seen attending these meetings on multiple occasions. If anything is finalised, it will be at one of these meets.”

Adding to that, the insider said, “If you remember, the climax of Dhoom was open-ended. There was no clarity on whether John’s character in the film was dead or had he escaped. This uncertainty could be used to see him make a return to the Dhoom franchise.”

In the Sidharth Anand-directed actioner Pathaan - which is also the fourth instalment in the YRF Spy Universe - John played the antagonist Jim. Also starring Deepika Padukone, Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana, the spy thriller clocked over ₹1,000 crores worldwide.

Speaking about the love and appreciation he received for his performance in the movie, John had earlier said, “It is incredible the amount of love that I have been receiving for playing Jim in Pathaan. As an actor, I only work for the love of audiences and fans. Records and milestones are a huge bonus and I’m grateful that Pathaan is such a historic blockbuster. I didn’t expect that people would love my character so much that they want more of Jim to be given to them.”
