Dhahanam is Ram Gopal Varma’s first web production. The popular filmmaker recently opened up about his recent project and why he chose to produce it.
"So far, all the criminal dramas, political dramas that I have created as a director, whether it 'Satya,' 'Company,' they are all situated in an urban environment," Ram told IANS. One of the reasons I found this narrative intriguing is because it is set in a rural, nearly inaccessible place that is lawless.”
Varma talked about how one of the areas was a place where even police officers were afraid to intervene in, despite knowing that illegal activities take place there. A setting could also become a character in itself that could influence everything else that happened in the story, he added.
“Overall, I thought the subject to be quite engaging; it necessitates long-form storytelling, and web series are the greatest platform for that," the filmmaker said.
Agasthya Manju directed the show, which also stars Abhishek Duhan, Ashwatkanth Sharma, Naina Ganguly, Parvathy Arun, and Ravi Kale.
When asked why he didn't direct the show but produced it, he explained that because region and culture are important parts of the story, he wanted a voice from the director of the show, and Agasthya, who had previously worked with him, comes from a similar part of the region as the story, so he was a better option as a director.
He went on to say that the series "Narcos" has 19 directors, but the public only knows the name of Chris Brancato, the project's creator. He also explained how a show is operated and how the most crucial aspects are not simply the director.
Ram believed that Isha Koppikar’s is the most relatable character on the series since she is a police investigative officer from the outside world attempting to grasp the lawless region that focuses around criminal cases. She is handled as though she is the audience, and the drama unfolds slowly for her.
