Devadoothan, the mystery thriller which features Mohanlal in the lead role, has been considered a cult classic. But the movie, helmed by Sibi Malayil, was a massive failure at the box office, at the time of its release. However, the Mohanlal-starrer earned immense love from the audience after its television premiere, and later the OTT release. In a recent interview with The New Indian Express, Sibi Malayil revealed that the story of Devadoothan was ‘altered’ for Mohanlal.
In his recent chat with The New Indian Express, Sibi Malayil extensively spoke about the failure of Devadoothan, and how it impacted him. According to the celebrated filmmaker, the original story was written differently and unsuitable for Mohanlal at that point. The initial version of the film’s story was written with a group of teenagers in the lead roles and was supposed to be made in another language. However, the film's producer pressured Sibi Malayil to rework the script in a way that suited Mohanlal.

Even though the director was sure that this subject was not suitable for a superstar, he reluctantly agreed to rework the script to include him. Even though the veteran actor played his part to near perfection, Devadoothan bombed at the box office. The movie failed to cater to the fans and cine-goers who were expecting a different kind of film when Mohanlal and Sibi Malayil reunited after a long gap.
Interestingly, in his chat with The New Indian Express, Sibi Malayil hinted that he is indeed planning to remake Devadoothan in another language (reportedly, in Tamil). However, the veteran filmmaker confirmed that this time he will not repeat the mistake and cast a big hero in the project. Instead, he is planning to make the film according to its original story draft, with teenagers playing the lead roles. The project is reportedly set to have its official launch, very soon.
