With the formation of Bridge7, the production banner of producer Swati Shetty and former CAA agent Grant Kessman, a sequel to the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire may soon be in the works. Celador, based in the United Kingdom, co-produced the picture with Film4, and the duo made an agreement with them to acquire the rights to make a sequel and air it on television.
Dev Patel made his movie debut as protagonist Jamal in Danny Boyle's 2008 feature. The film follows a young guy from a poor family as he competes on India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and it won eight Oscars, including best picture and director. A.R. Rahman's score for the film received nominations for four Golden Globes and seven BAFTAs.
Shetty and Kessman said in a statement announcing the pact that Slumdog Millionaire is definitely one of those stories that stays long after the credits roll. This story exemplifies the types of stories that captivate audiences by combining lightheartedness with meaningful themes and experiences. Its appeal transcends borders and cultures. The astounding thing about Slumdog Millionaire is not just the cinematic brilliance of the film in terms of story, music, and awards, but also the fact that it assembled a world-class cast.
Paul Smith, chairman of Celador International, expressed his joy that Grant and Swati have selected the Slumdog Millionaire sequel as the platform for their newly established company. As the next installment of Jamal's journey of self-discovery plays out onscreen, Celador is excited to collaborate with Bridge7.
With a 25-year background in the business, Shetty has worked with Disney, Imagine Entertainment, and Netflix. Both the 2015 Sundance audience prize winner Umrika and the Netflix romantic comedy Wedding Season are her production credits.
Before moving to London, Kessman worked as a TV literary agent for CAA for 20 years. He was involved in projects such as Monsieur Spade and Paris Has Fallen, which starred Gerard Butler.
According to Variety's sources, Tony-winning producer Ken Davenport acquired the rights to adapt the film into a new musical earlier this month; however, this transaction is distinct from the one with Bridge7.
