Dev took to Twitter to announce that he will be the next Byomkesh Bakshi for the film, Durgo Rohoshyo. The film will be jointly produced by Shadow Films and Dev and directed by Birsa Dasgupta. Ever since he made the announcements, netizens, his fans and the members of the Tollywood fraternity could not keep calm. From excitement to congratulatory notes and scepticism are still flying high on social media.
Several people have expressed their reservations over Dev’s acting capability and the casting of him as Byomkesh. Rahul Arunodoy Banerjee is one of them. On his social media handle, he wrote: “Khushwant Singh’s joke: Two Sardars are playing chess. Abd Bengali’s joke: Dev will play Byomkesh.” It technically means that Dev playing a serious character like Byomkesh is laughable.
It goes without saying that Dev did not comment on Rahul’s post. Meanwhile, producer Rana Sarkar took a dig at the so-called intellectual Bengalis and claimed that Despite the weak making of Byomkesh by Satyajit Ray and Rituparno Ghosh and yet no Bengali dared to criticise them. He added that Satyajit’s Byomkesh was still salvaged by the presence of Uttam Kumar but Sujoy Ghosh Playingh Byomkesh in rityparno’s film was bad and Bengali did not say a word. He claimed that Arindam Sil’s Byomkesh films are the best. Anjan Dutt, who started the Byomkesh franchise, did a good job in the first two Byomkesh. He also added that Abir is the best and the most popular Byomkesh among the Bengali audience.
Without naming Anirban Bhattacharya, Rana further took a dig at Hoichoi’s Byomkesh series. He wrote, “You may be like Naseeruddin Shah in acting and can be the heartthrob of women with your public image but Abir is in the viewers’ minds as Byomkesh.”
Rana also predicted that Dev will put all his effort to play the character and Durgo Rohoshyo will become the highest-grossing Bengali film. He also added, “Dev will look better than Satyajit ray’s Uttam Kumar, Rituparno’s Sujoy Ghosh, and poor man’s Al Pacino of an OTT platform as Byomkesh.” Amid all the controversies, Dev has not commented at all.
