Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s tumultuous married life caught the attention of the entire world back in 2022 when the two found themselves embroiled in a most rancorous, equally infamous, courtroom trial. Having been married to one another for nearly four years, the once passionate lovers sprawled out the darkest moments of their life together in front of the world, as their respective teams of lawyers battled it out for them.
The context
Following an op-ed piece (a section dedicated to personal comments in a newspaper) that Amber Heard wrote in 2018, titled I spoke up against sexual violence - and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change, Johnny Depp sued her for alleged defamation for $50 million. Though he wasn’t named in the article by Heard, Depp alleged that he found it quite difficult to land movie roles because of what was implied.
It must be noted that Amber Heard and Johnny Depp got married in 2015 and got divorced in 2017. After Depp sued her, Amber Heard filed a counterclaim for $100 million against him.
When and Where to Watch Depp v Heard
The defamation trial, as privy to the entire world, got underway on April 11, 2022, and was concluded on June 1, 2022, with the jury awarding Johnny Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages (later reduced to $350,000). He was also found liable in one of Heard’s multiple counterclaims meaning that she was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages.
Beyond the objective verdict, the nearly six-week-long trial attracted the scrutiny of the entire world. All the court proceedings were live-streamed and the trial was arguably the most discussed and searched topic while it transpired.
The same trial now becomes the subject of the new Netflix three-part documentary series titled Depp v Heard. Helmed by Emma Cooper, the limited series attempts to offer a neutral view of what happened with its main focus set on the public discourse which may or may not have guided the narrative.
What can we expect from Depp v Heard?
Although there’s so much to unravel and analyse when it comes to the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard issue, one hopes to see the upcoming show shed enough light on the nature of the relationship that the two shared when they first got together. Depp is said to have had a head-over-heels moment when he first met Heard on the sets of Rum Diary, so it would be fascinating to see how a story that began on such a promising note, went off the rails over time.
That said, it is likely that Depp v. Heard will stick to what took place inside the courtroom, using the live-streamed footage as its main instrument.
