In 2020, Deepika Padukone announced that her production company, KA Productions, will be developing the Hindi version of the Robert Di Niro and Anne Hathaway-starring Hollywood classic The Intern. Initially, Deepika Padukone was set to co-star with Rishi Kapoor. After the latter's death, Amitabh Bachchan joined the cast, and the announcement was made in 2021. The two actors previously appeared together as father and daughter in Piku, the critically acclaimed film by Shoojit Sircar.
Rumours of casting changes:
But rumours began circulating last year that Deepika had dropped out of the film and Parineeti Chopra may replace her, while Big B will reportedly remain an integral part of the film. But now News18 has reported an update about the film.
Deepika will be making her third foray into production with The Intern remake, following Chhapaak and 83. Her roles as producer and actor ensure that she remains integral to the project. Producers are now ready to roll out the film, despite numerous delays caused by unforeseen events.
Production schedule:
According to the source, The Intern is currently scheduled to begin production in the first quarter of 2024, after Fighter, which stars Hrithik Roshan and Anil Kapoor, comes out in theatres. If all goes according to plan, filming will start in January or February of next year. It is still unknown when Big B will begin shooting, the insider adds, but Deepika will be a part of the film's initial schedule.
Back in 2020, DP spoke about the film, stating that The Intern is an intimate, relationship-driven film set in and around the workplace, a story that she believes is very relevant to the present-day social and cultural environment. She was referring to the story's focus on relationships in the workplace. This narrative is the perfect blend of lighthearted comedy and drama that I have been seeking. Deepika is immensely excited to embark on this adventure.
As per the actor's 2021 Instagram post, Sunil Kheterpal will serve as co-producer for the The Intern remake, which will also include Warner Brothers India, Ka Productions, and Azure Entertainment. Amit Ravindernath Sharma was supposed to direct the film with a summer 2022 release date in mind.
