Instances of self doubt and insecurities seem to be part and parcel of the acting trade, even for seasoned stars. Atleast, that’s how it goes for R. Madhavan, who was recently seen in the Netflix drama Decoupled. The star recently opened up about how he still suffers from bouts of insecurities, even after a career stretching over two decades.

In conversation with Mid Day, Madhavan talked about how the instances of self doubt would hit him when he observed young physically fit actors post photos of their abs on their social media. The Tanu Weds Manu star said that when he saw young stars act in films alongside popular actresses like Anushka Sharma, he would wonder whether he too would have opportunities like that in the future.

When such thoughts plagued him, Madhavan said he would try to convince himself that it would be better to stick to roles that were appropriate for his age. Anything other than that would seem absurd, he added. Although such rationalisations helped him maintain his sanity, the star admitted that sometimes they also made him feel sluggish.

The star also talked about his recent Netflix series, Decoupled. He revealed that although his character, Arya, was written as a man who many would deem a jerk, the actor had tried to make the character more likeable through his portrayal.

Decoupled tells the story of a couple who decide to end their loveless marriage. But several twists and turns along their ‘decoupling’ journey make it easier said than done. In addition to Madhavan, the series also stars Surveen Chawla.

Decoupled is available to stream on Netflix.
