Dasara, Nani’s pan-Indian action entertainer that hit screens on March 30, lived upto expectations, drawing praise from critics and performing well at the ticket window over three weeks. The performances of Keerthy Suresh, Dheekshith, Santhosh Narayanan’s music and Sathyan Sooryan’s cinematography received applause from several corners.
Many hailed the maturity of director Srikanth Odela in handling complex human emotions in his very first film. While the Telugu version performed exceedingly well in terms of trade, Dasara didn’t exactly roar at the box office in the other languages. It’s understandable as well because not every second pan-Indian film can recreate the impact of a Pushpa or a KGF across the country.
Now, the film is gearing up for its OTT premiere on the leading streamer Netflix and it’s coming out sooner than expected. Dasara will be up on the platform next Thursday i.e. April 27 in multiple languages, precisely four weeks after its theatrical release. Poorna, Samuthirakani, Shine Tom Chacko, Jhansi and others played important roles in the action entertainer set in the Godavari khani region.
The director based the story on a real incident in his maternal grandmother’s hometown Veerlapally, discussing the repercussions of the alcohol prohibition implemented by NTR in his third and final stint as AP CM in 1994. The first-time filmmaker used the opportunity quite well in elaborating on traditions, customs specific to the region through the dialogues and the music.
However, those who didn’t like Dasara much said the film was quite similar to Sukumar’s Rangasthalam (incidentally the film that Srikanth Odela had assisted Sukumar) and opined that it its rustic aesthetic was inspired by Pushpa. Despite the familiar plot, Dasara is undeniably a brilliant film in terms of technicalities and it’s expected to get its due worldwide with its OTT premiere next weekend.
