Coolie release update: Rajinikanth, Lokesh Kanagaraj to make the big announcement soon?

Rajinikanth is teaming up with Lokesh Kanagaraj, for his next outing Coolie. The movie, which is touted to be a crime action thriller, marks the first onscreen collaboration of the actor-director duo. As reported earlier, the shooting of Coolie is now nearing its final stages, and the makers are set to drop a major update on the film, in December 2024. Meanwhile, the grapevine suggests that the Rajinikanth starrer might hit the theatres earlier than expected.

Rajinikanth’s Coolie gets a release date?

Earlier, it was reported that Coolie is expected to have its grand theatrical release in June 2025. However, the recent updates suggest that Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ambitious project might hit the theatres earlier than expected. If the reports are to be believed, the makers are planning to have a May 2025 release for the highly anticipated film. According to the grapevine, director Lokesh and his team have finalised May 1, 2025, as the Rajinikanth starrer’s new release date.

Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s dropped film

For the uninitiated, the talented filmmaker was initially planning to make a fantasy film with Rajinikanth in a negative role. The project, which was expected to be shot on an IMAX camera, was later put on the back burner due to its massive scale. The producers and leading man also wanted to finish their next outing in just six months, and that was also a reason to drop the idea. Instead, Lokesh Kanagaraj narrated a different story idea to Rajinikanth, which eventually became Coolie.

Rajinikanth is set to play the central character Deva in Coolie, which is touted to be a dark action thriller. Along with the legendary superstar, the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial features a stellar star cast, including Nagarjuna Akkineni, Sathyaraj, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, and Shruti Haasan in pivotal roles. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Lokesh confirmed that the other big stars are not making cameo appearances in the film, but have well-defined characters.
