The day and age of sequels is thriving, with every possible production house trying hard to cash in on the trend of nostalgia and churn out the last drop of potential profit. The latest film to enter this trend is the 2012 hit Cocktail, starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty. According to the latest reports, the film is getting a sequel. Yes, you read that right. Producer Dinesh Vijan, under his Maddock Productions banner, is backing a sequel to one of his most successful films, originally directed by Homi Adajania. Reportedly, Shahid Kapoor has been roped in for the sequel.
Yes, you read that right. The makers of Cocktail are now planning a sequel to their hit film, with Shahid Kapoor in the lead. It is said that while the actor is yet to sign the dotted line, he has agreed to star in the film and is committed to the project. As per Peeping Moon, the producer and director have been attempting to develop a sequel to the Saif Ali Khan starrer for years, and they have finally stumbled upon a storyline to take the story forward.
“Dinesh Vijan and Homi Adajania have been toying with the idea of a Cocktail sequel for years, and they’ve now crafted a storyline that they believe matches the magic of the first film. Although Cocktail 2 features a completely new narrative, its tone and vibrant setting evoke the original, thus being labeled a sequel. Shahid loved the story and is already on board, while discussions with several leading young actresses are in progress,” a source close to the development told the portal.

According to the same report, Cocktail 2 has been described as an urban rom-com exploring the complicated dynamics of love and friendship, similar to the 2012 original, which revolved around a love triangle between three star-crossed friends and how their lives turn upside down because of it. Interestingly, the original film also had Imtiaz Ali as part of the writing team, though there is no confirmation yet on whether he has joined the team again. However, Imtiaz previously attempted a sequel to Love Aaj Kal with Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, which bombed at the box office. Dinesh Vijan was also the producer of that sequel, while the original Love Aaj Kal starred Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone.
Shahid Kapoor is set to begin work on Cocktail 2 after he finishes shooting Vishal Bhardwaj’s next project, which enters production this December. There is no update yet on who will play the female lead in the film. You can watch Cocktail on JioCinema in India with your OTTplay Premium Subscription.
