Dulquer Salmaan’s performance in director R Baki’s thriller Chup is already winning hearts. His Sita Ramam co-star Mrunal Thakur is the latest to lavish praise on the Malayalam star for his role as Danny the florist in the film, which hit theatres on September 23.
Mrunal, who had played Sita in the Telugu blockbuster Sita Ramam, spoke to the media soon after Chup’s preview. “I am so happy that I could share screen space with him and to watch him, first as Ram and now as Danny, it's incredible,” the actress said.
The film, which is also designed as a tribute to filmmaker Guru Dutt and his movies, was also replete with references that appealed to the actress. “I am a huge fan of Guru Dutt sir and I got to see glimpses of his films in Chup,” she said, adding that she was also delighted to see Sunny Deol back with the movie.
Even before its release, fans of Dulquer have already been looking for the second successive superhit for the star, whose previous Malayalam and Telugu releases – Kurup and Sita Ramam – grossed over Rs 90 crore each in worldwide box office. Chup’s advance ticket bookings had already crossed over a lakh on Thursday, boosted by the largely positive reviews from the audience who had attended the free previews held across select cities in the country on September 20.
The film revolves around a sociopath to preys on movie critics. Dulquer in a recent interview with Khaleej Times had said that Chup is not a “critic bashing film”. “It’s a very sensitive story about somebody who’s an artist and what he faced. I don’t think you’ll feel it is a critic bashing film,” he said.
On Thursday, Dulquer’s Guns and Gulaabs directors Raj and DK also praised the film, calling it a “quirky one-of-a-kind meta experience” and lauding the Malayalam superstar’s performance. Chup is set to release on ZEE5 after its theatrical run.
