Filmmaker Samy, who made movies like Uyir and Mirugam, surprised one and all when he announced that he will be remaking Children of Heaven, the Iranian classic, helmed by Majid Majidi in 1997, in Tamil. Titled Akka Kuruvi, the movie has been produced by Madurai Muthu Movies along with Kanavu Thozhirsalai.
Ilaiyaraaja has composed music for the movie which will be released by PVR Pictures on May 6. One of the popular films of all time, Children of Heaven's story revolves around a young brother and his small sister.
The makers of Akka Kuruvi chose Mahin and Daviya to essay lead roles in the project after auditioning more than 200 children. Danseuse Tara Jagadamba and Senthilkumar play pivotal characters as the children's father in the film. Actor-filmmaker Parthiban, director Ameer and actor Aadhi attended the audio event of Akka Kuruvi the other day.
At the event, Ilaiyaraaja was all praise for Samy and went on to say that the latter has come up with a better version than the original film.
The makers also revealed that Majid Majidi himself sent a letter of appreciation to them after watching Akka Kuruvi. According to them, the Iranian filmmaker said that the Tamil version has done justice to the original version he made more than two decades ago.
He added that the emotions in the film has been neatly tweaked to suit the nativity of Indian audience. Majid is also said to have enjoyed Raja's music and felt that his background score complemented the story telling.
Akka Kuruvi will have a box office clash with RK Suresh's Visithiran and KS Ravikumar's Koogle Kuttapa. Interestingly, Visithiran and Koogle Kuttapa are also remakes. While the former is the remake of Joseph from Mollywood, the latter, too, is an adapted version of a Malayalam movie, titled Android Kunjappan Version 5.25
