Laxman Utekar has directed the epic biography of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj for his debut historical drama, Chhaava. Starring Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, alongside Rashmika Mandanna, the film has been generating significant buzz since the release of its teaser. While fans are anticipating its release, the latest reports suggest that the film will release in mid-February in 2025.
Chhaava release date
As per a Mid-Day report, the makers of Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava are aiming for a mid-February 2025 release. The release is meant to coincide with Shivaji Jayanti on February 19.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the release date of Chhaava has been pushed further to avoid its clash with Allu Arjun’s PAN India release, Pushpa 2, which will be released on December 5, 2024. Chhaava was earlier supposed to be released on December 6, 2024.
Laxman Utekar on Chhaava
In an interview with India Today, filmmaker Laxman Utekar opened up about Chhaava. He said, “Everyone knows about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, but no one knows about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He had such great courage and was a great warrior, but sadly no one knows about it."
He further added that during the pandemic, when he read about Sambhaji Maharaj, he realized he is such a big character and he is not talked about enough. "That's when I started writing and the idea of Chhaava came to me," Laxman added.
The director further said that he was inspired by the shades, and layers of Sambhaji Maharaj with his reign spanning 10 years.
“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ne jo jyot jalai thi, Sambhaji Maharaj ne uss jyot se Mughal sultanat main aag laga di thi. (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj lit the flame, and Sambhaji Maharaj used that flame to set the Mughal Empire on fire)," he said.
Meanwhile, directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava is based on the Marathi novel of the same name by Shivaji Sawant. The shooting for the film commenced in October 2023. The historical period drama features Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale, his wife.
