On Thursday, the tie-breaker match between Magnus Carlsen and R Praggnanandhaa concluded with the Norwegian triumphing over the Indian, securing victory in the Chess World Cup.
After a two-game classical series that resulted in a draw, Carlsen managed to defeat Praggnanandhaa during the tiebreaker phase.
Carlsen thwarted the 18-year-old's attempt to claim the title, despite Praggnanandhaa's earlier victory over Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana with a score of 3.5-2.5 in the semi-final. This victory would have made Praggnanandhaa the youngest-ever player to win the Chess World Cup.
Tiebreak format:
Format 1 - 25+10 - 2 Games (Rapid) Tiebreak 2 - 10+10 - 2 Games (Rapid) Tiebreak 3 - 5+3 - 2 Games (Blitz) Tiebreak 4 - Sudden-Death - 3+2 (Blitz)
Carlsen secured victory in the initial tiebreak (25+10) after a blunder foiled Praggnanandhaa's chances.
In the subsequent tiebreak, Carlsen displayed exceptional skill (resulting in a draw), leading him to clinch his first Chess World Cup title.
