Lyca Productions on Thursday announced the release date of its upcoming venture Chandramukhi 2. Starring Kangana Ranaut and Raghava Lawrence in the lead roles, the movie is set to arrive in cinemas during the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday. However, the filmmakers have not revealed the film's exact release date.
Chandramukhi 2 will mark Lawrence's first pan-India release as it will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. Given that it stars Kangana as the female lead, it is expected to get a wide release in the Hindi heartland.
Kangana is also a familiar face among the Tamil movie audience. She made her debut in Tamil in the 2008 action movie Dhaam Dhoom. After her career took off in Bollywood, she didn't return to Tamil cinema for over a decade. She made a comeback in Tamil with the 2021 political drama Thalaivii. In the biopic drama, she essayed the role of the late former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Even though her performance made an impression on the audience, the film didn't work at the box office.
Chandramukhi 2 might just give the much-needed break that Kangana is waiting for in the South Indian circuit. This is a follow-up to the 2005 blockbuster Chandramukhi, which had superstar Rajinikanth in the lead role. This time, the film will showcase Lawrence as the leading man, adding an exciting new dynamic to the project. It is worth noting that popular comedian Vadivelu, who was part of the original film's cast, has been retained for the sequel.
Filmmaker P Vasu has also roped in several A-list performers for the supporting cast, including Radhika Sarathkumar, Vadivelu, Lakshmi Menon and Mahima Nambiar.
While there has been speculation about whether Chandramukhi 2 is a remake of Vasu's 2010 supernatural drama Aptharakshaka, details remain unclear at this point. Aptharakshaka, starring the late movie icon Vishnuvardhan, served as a sequel to Apthamitra, which itself was the Kannada remake Malayalam classic Manichitrathazhu.
