According to Rahman, in a very musically rich country like India, it's always a treat to tell a story about a musician hailing from Punjab. As a result, Imtiaz and he opted to inject certain Broadway-style elements into their interpretation of the narrative musical. Imtiaz's transformation throughout the story captivated The Mozart of Madras.
Rahman loved seeing Diljit's development as a musician, artist, and actor, and it was a delight to work with him because he is modest but has a vibrant personality. It was also a pleasure to work with Parineeti on her singing for him and to collaborate with her. The lyrics are always top-notch, thanks to the fantastic Irshad Kamil, and being a part of this endeavour is an incredible experience for the Oscar-winning musician.
Imtiaz shared that it was thrilling to witness Rahman plunge into the core of Panjabi music in Chamkila. Amar Singh Chamkila, who was a best-selling musician in Punjab, is the perfect inspiration to delve into the vibrant and poignant world of Panjabi music. Incorporating long-forgotten indigenous musical genres and instruments into Chamkila's album was an intriguing experiment.
Irshad Kamil was also the perfect choice to modernise the age-old power of Panjabi boli for this album's music. With the addition of Diljit and Parineeti, they were able to record a plethora of tunes live on-site for the film, which was always going to have intriguing music based on the lives of the musical pair Chamkila and Amarjot. They can't wait for this song to reach listeners all across the globe.
Amar Singh Chamkila, the original rockstar of the masses from Punjab, was assassinated at the young age of 27 after rising to fame in the 1980s despite enraging many people with his powerful music. This is the untold true story of Chamkila, who came from humble beginnings and became a household name in Punjab.
Chamkila will be available to stream on Netflix starting April 12, 2024.
