In the realm of Hindi cinema, sports dramas are notoriously tricky to pull off. Many films in this genre follow a set blueprint, making them feel repetitive after a while. However, there are exceptions—films that break the mold and transform the formula into something more unique and impactful. One film that stands as the gold standard in this genre is Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De! India. Released in 2007, it remains the undisputed king of Hindi sports dramas, even 17 years later. With its anniversary upon us, there’s no better time for a rewatch, and we’ve got you covered on where to find it.

Chak De! India Turns 17

Chak De! India hit the big screen on August 10, 2007, and was an instant hit. Directed by Shimit Amin, the film, starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, was a refreshing departure from the typical sports dramas of the time. It tackled issues like women's participation in sports, the struggles of living with a Muslim identity, and still managed to succeed as a commercial film by all standards. The movie was truly one of a kind. As it marks another milestone, here’s where you can stream it.

Chak De! India features Shah Rukh Khan alongside Sagarika Ghatge, Vidya Malvade, Chitrashi Rawat, Shilpa Shukla, Vibha Chibber, and an ensemble cast. The movie is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video with no additional charges beyond your subscription. Alternatively, you can rent the film on AppleTV for just Rs 80. The 148-minute-long film has been lauded globally over the past 17 years.

Shimit Amin on Making Chak De! India

In an interview with Zoom, director Shimit Amin discussed why he chose to make Chak De! India with women at its center. He said, “When I’d go out on Sunday mornings searching for female athletes, every single green patch I passed had boys playing cricket. There was no hockey anywhere, let alone female hockey players. I couldn’t even see a female cricketer anywhere. If I had to make a cricket movie, my life would be so much easier, but we loved the script so much that we wanted to be as true to it as possible. We had to choose semi-actors and train them to play hockey and act.”

“For three months, the cast and crew would wake up at 4:30 am and play hockey for five hours. Then, they would undergo physiotherapy. It was nerve-wracking. We didn’t know if it would work. But all the actors, hockey players, and actor-players helped one another. They became one community. The cast never felt like it was acting. Finally, they looked convincing as a team,” he added.
