A great witch called Sypha once said: “We know the stories, but sometimes it’s hard to separate fact from truth.” This is exactly how fans have been feeling about one of Netflix’s most popular video-game adaptations, the fourth and final season of Castlevania. This animated horror series has always fulfilled its promise of violence, bloodshed and gore. But this is not what has drawn fans in right from the get go - it is the plot of the medieval fantasy series - which revolves around Trevor Belmont (the last descendant of the disgraced Belmont clan) who is trying to save humanity from Vlad Dracula Tepes, a reimagining of the age old Gothic horror antagonist - that has kept fans eagerly waiting for more.

The last we saw of our favourites in Castlevania, some dark revelations were made and some central characters discovered monumental secrets. Though Hector and Trevor were in hot water at the end of season 3, there are many more important unanswered questions that season 4 will attempt to highlight. Here is all you need to know about Castlevania season 4.

What does the trailer tell us?

This action-heavy trailer features Trevor and Sypha doing what they’re best at - killing vampires, skeletons and other monsters they bump into. Sypha has definitely levelled up with some new powerful magic that she has learned to cast. The animation quality looks incredible as Alucard is seen in his iconic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night look.

What do we know about the plot of season 4?

If you’ve been a fan of the central cast, then chances are you weren’t quite happy with the season 3 end. And why should you be? Alucard has disposed off Taka and Sumi as he takes over for his father Dracula. This makes us wonder if the ease with which he has murdered his friends turns him into something even more sinister. Trevor and Sypha managed to close the Infinite Corridor and prevent Dracula’s return from earth. Hector, who is enslaved by Lenore, is going to have to command his night creatures and raise a new army for the Council of Sisters.

Forgemaster Isaac is the only one whose character has a largely positive conclusion at the end of season 3, with the hint that his aim of destroying the human race might have changed to something else. It is guaranteed that he will be instrumental in the violence that the show boasts of.

Alucard might succumb to the trope of a classic mad king due to his mounting loneliness, especially after he murders Taka and Sumi after having taught them all they know. He is a spitting reflection of the deeds of his father, and the audience is left to wonder how much worse he can get. The fourth season will also delve into Dhampir’s humanity and if he has the same weaknesses as other vampires. If Alucard, however, truly embraces the vampire in him, the residents of Wallachia are in trouble.

There is a good chance that Trevor and Sypha will return to Dracula’s castle. But whether they will be greeted warmly by Alucard is yet to be seen. Isaac’s army is also preparing to face the Council of Sisters.

Going by the poster that Netflix shared as a teaser before announcing the season, Carmilla might undergo a transformation that finally lets her take control of her vampiric powers. Count Saint Germaine is also on the poster, which leads us to believe there is more to his character than was led on.

How many episodes will season 4 have?

Since the previous seasons have had an inconsistent number of episodes, our best guess is that the next season will have between four to 10 episodes. The plot needs to conclude by the end of the season, for which the creators have used at least eight episodes in the past.

Castlevania will return for its fourth season on Netflix on May 13.
