Looks like Aamir Khan's penchant for sports dramas has found a new edge as the actor opts to play a coach in his next. Yes, as per the latest reports, Khan will be working with Tamil-Hindi director R.S. Prasanna for the official remake of the 2018 Spanish film Campeones and will be essaying the role of an alcoholic, arrogant coach who, much against his own will, is assigned a team with learning disabilities.
As per the latest reports, the Hindi remake is scheduled to go on floors in January of 2023 and Aamir Khan has already given his dates for the six-month-long schedule. The pre-production work, we hear, is already underway which entails recce and finalizing the cast & crew of the film. Same reports suggest that Anushka Sharma, Khan's PK co-star, will play the female lead in the film.
Produced by Sony Pictures India, the Campeones remake will be directed by R.S. Prasanna who has previously directed the 2013 Tamil film Kalyana Samayal Saadham and later helmed the Hindi remake of the same film - Shubh Mangal Savdhan (starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar).
Campeones, which translates to Champions in English, is a 2018 Spanish comedy-drama directed by Javier Fesser. The film follows assistant basketball coach Marco Montes whose life is turned upside down when, following a job suspension and a drunken-driving incident, he is ordered by the court to either spend two years in prison or perform community service by coaching a special-needs team. While Campeones revolved around basketball, R.S. Prasanna & Co. are yet to reveal the central sport of their film.
Aamir Khan's next venture as an actor has been a subject of great scrutiny, particularly in the aftermath of the box office failure of Laal Singh Chaddha. Despite the sincere efforts of the entire team, Laal Singh Chaddha was unable to leverage the hype and ended up a commercial disappointment, causing Khan to turn reclusive with the media. The actor-producer even took a much-needed break from things for a quick vacation trip to the U.S.A.
