Amazon Prime Video has dropped the first official trailer of the much-awaited, colour-blind adaptation of the Disney classic fairytale Cinderella. And, suffice to say, it promises to be an enchanting fit to the present times; magical at heart and feminist in spirit.
Camilla Cabello’s modern princess wants to be a businesswoman, more than marrying the prince and sashaying up the castle as the queen of the kingdom, more than anything else.
“This is it, dresses by Ella!” - Camilla as Cinderella opens the trailer with her one defining dream. The modern retelling of the classic fairy tale has retained the basic plot but with refreshing and relevant twists.
Ella lives a life of tough toil under her unkind stepmother (Idina Menzel) and stepsisters. But her dream of becoming a seamstress and taking the reins of her life keeps her going through it all.

When the king, played by Pierce Brosnan, announces a ball for his prince to choose his bride, Ella looks at it as a golden opportunity to show her dresses to everyone. Her stepmother blotches her endeavours, quite literally. But then the Fabulous G, the modern avatar of the Fairy Godmother played by Billy Porter appears in a gleaming golden gown. The casting of gay American actor Porter as the genderless fairy godparent is a welcome reversal to the fairy godmother archetype.
When the prince played by Nicholas Galitzine proposes marriage to her, she says, “I have dreams that I have to chase.” While her stepmother is now keen to have her married to the prince as it is good for the family both in terms of wealth and stature, Ella wants more out of life than sitting pretty solely as the prince’s bride.
The trailer also offers a sneak peek into the musical ride that the film will be.
Kay Cannon has written and directed Cinderella, which features James Corden, Missy Elliott, Minnie Driver and others in key roles. Camilla makes her feature-film debut with the film.
Cinderella looks at a worldwide premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 3.
