Byomkesh on Hoichoi: Is Rahul the new Ajit in Srijit Mukherji’s Durgo Rawhoshyo? | Exclusive

We have seen him as Byomkesh Bakshi’s author friend Ajit Bandyopadhyay in Arindam Sil’s Byomkesh Gotro. Now Rahul Arunodoy Banerjee is reportedly gearing up to be back as Ajit in Srijit Mukherji’s much-hyped Byomkesh web series on Hoichoi. Anirban Bhattacharya will play Byomkesh in the series. OTTplay has earlier reported that big screen Satyabati Sohini Sarkar is likely to play the character in the web series.

Based on Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s Durgo Rowhoshyo, Srijit will direct Hoichoi’s ninth season of Byomkesh with Anirban. The eighth season, which is directed by Sudipto Roy and based on Byomkesh O Chiriyakhana, will be dropped on April 7. In the upcoming web series, Bhashwar Chatterjee will be seen as the new Ajit with Ridhima Ghosh as Satyabati. However, both actors are replaced in Srijit’s Byomkesh. 

Earlier, Srijit was scheduled to direct Byomkesh O Durgo Rawhoshyo on the big screen with Shadow Films. Shadow Films owns the film rights to the novel, Durgo Rohoshyo. However, Dev associated with the production house and emerged as the new Byomkesh. The filmmaker wanted to keep Anirban as his Byomkesh and as a result, Birsa Dasgupta became the new director of the film. Now, Srijit will be directing the same lesser-explored story on the web as the digital rights of the story are with Hoichoi. 

Meanwhile, soon after Dev announced the new Byomkesh, several people expressed their reservations over Dev’s acting capability and the casting of him as the sharp Bengali sleuth. Rahul is one of them. On his social media handle, he wrote: “Khushwant Singh’s joke: Two Sardars are playing chess. And Bengali’s joke: Dev will play Byomkesh.” It technically means that Dev playing a serious character like Byomkesh is laughable. Dev did not comment on the sarcasm.

On the other hand, Srijit was also supposed to bring the second season of Feludar Goyendagiri with Bhuswargo Bhoyonkwar. As per sources, that, along with several Hoichoi’s other projects, got postponed indefinitely. Srijit is currently busy with Sherlock for BBC India. Soon he will be directing the cop universe saga with Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu U Sengupta, Subhashree Ganguly, and Anirban.
