Brigands: The Quest for Gold is an Italian tv drama that had been acquired by Netflix back in 2021 with four others, including The Law According to Lidia Poët. The streaming giant has finally given the show a release date for this summer. Directed by Antonio Le Fosse, Steve Saint Leger, and Nicola Sorcinelli, the series is set in mid 19th century after the Risorgimento (meaning Resurgence in Italian), or the Unification of the Italian States.
Episodes of Brigands: The Quest for Gold will be available from April 23, 2024, onward. The six-episode limited series has also shared a trailer that offers an intriguing glimpse of the dramatic and historical journey that lies ahead, full of greed, lies, betrayal, deception, darkness, ruthlessness, politics, and the fight for liberation. Intermingled with a political and socio-cultural narrative, the show’s powerful premise might be the reason behind its little promotion.

Brigands: The Quest for Gold follows the journey of Philomena, a dutiful wife to a wealthy but cruel Piedmontese leader who is intent on a solid crop of gold, hidden somewhere in South Italy. The leader intends his men to go on a short trip and capture the gold for him, as the funds will help them put an end to the bandits and rebels crowding the South and bring ‘peace’. But when Philomena is forced to go on the run, she carefully keeps the piece key to his plan- the map.
Unlike multiple portrayals and claims, the brigands are mainly rebels looting to gather funds to gain liberty and survive. And sheltered, meek Philomena joins them, shaves her silky locks, and becomes one of them, before rising up the ranks to lead. But she is not the only female bandit, and the others are more experienced and ruthless. But Philomena’s upbringing, observation, and calm yet passionate mind is a huge advantage for her on the hostile, jungle terrain.
When the State pits these brigand groups against one another, their leaders must put up a united front instead of petty struggles, to earn back their independence. And all this must be done, while Philomena and her brigands fight and search for the gold, before the State gets their hands on it. A powerful tale of transformation, liberation, and an underrated slice of history, Brigands: The Quest for Gold is incomplete without Michela De Rossi’s flawless portrayal of Philomena.
