Mammootty is joining hands with talented director Rahul Sadasivan for his next outing in Bramayugam. The highly anticipated project, which is touted to be a horror thriller, reportedly features the megastar of Malayalam cinema in a never-seen-before avatar. Along with Mammootty, the much-awaited project also features young actor Arjun Ashokan in a pivotal role. The recently revealed censor details of Bramayugam have dropped some major hints about the film’s plot.
According to the censor copy details of Bramayugam, which are now surfacing online, Bramayugam is set in a Kerala village of a different time period and revolves around a folklore singer named Thevan from the Paanan caste who gets stranded in a mysterious place. Arjun Ashokan is set to play the role of Thevan in the film, which reportedly features Mammootty as Kunjamon Potti, a mysterious man who belongs to an aristocratic family.
“In the age-old Kerala, where Tantra/Maya was an everyday reality, Thevan, a folklore singer from the Paanan caste (a lower caste wherein their occupation is singing hymns of praises about gods and rulers), loses his way after narrowly escaping from a slave market. His life takes an unexpected turn when he accidentally stumbles upon a mysterious trad,” reads the official synopsis of the film, which is mentioned in the censor details.

From the official posters and the teaser that have been released so far, it is safe to assume that the veteran actor is indeed set to play a negative role in the much-awaited film. Mammootty is seen in a look that reminds of the ‘Kathi Vesham’ (antagonist) of the ancient temple art form Kathakali in one of the posters, which underlines that this character indeed has negative shades. In another poster, the megastar is seen performing a puja in front of a strange idol with the skulls of an animal and a human on the side, thus hinting that he is playing the role of a ‘durmanthravadi’ (black magician).
Bramayugam is set to have a pan-Indian release in five languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, on February 25, 2024. Christo Xavier composes the songs and the original score. Shehnad Jalal, ISC, is the director of photography. Shafique Mohamed Ali handles the editing. The Rahul Sadasivan directorial is produced by Night Shift Studios and Y Not Studios.
